Flood Protection of Stężycka Valley. Another work stage completed

Wody Polskie completed the third stage of expanding the flood embankment in Stężycka Valley at the Vistula River. The entire five-stage project will comprise modernisation of the flood embankment along the Vistula river which is 5.5 km long. The project task is to increase flood safety of the town of Dęblin and the commune of Stężyca in the area of close to 23 km2. The total cost of this project is PLN 32 million.

The project called “Development of the Vistula Flood Embankment in Stężycka Valley” has 5 stages. Its implementation was planned for 2019–2022. In December 2020, embankment modernisation and reinforcement works were completed at the distance of 1.338 km during stage 3. Stage 1 and 2 of the project entailed works at the distance of 4.162 km of the flood embankment.

The embankment modernisation is aimed at the comprehensive protection of Stężycka Valley residents from flood. The valley is inhabited by more than 1,500 people. Flood protection is a priority activity of PGW Wody Polskie and is of key importance for the local community.

Rebuilding hydroengineering structures will improve water flow conditions, reducing the probability of ice jams and the process of the Vistula bank erosion. Stężycka Valley will obtain more effective flood protection and better water balance, while the residents of those agricultural region will gain favourable conditions for land management and use of water reservoirs situated behind the embankments.
